18-5 season earns varsity basketball a playoff berth, first in a decade

In terms of sheer results, the 2019-2020 varsity basketball team had a historic year. We finished 18-5, with wins over several league powerhouses like Lawrence Academy, Beaver Country Day, and Rivers. The team earned a Class-B playoff berth for the first time in about a decade. In the first round, we were slated to play St. Luke’s School at Cheshire Academy. We fought hard, but ended up losing 47-57. Although we came up short in the playoffs, each of us were proud of the effort we had put in, the results we achieved, and the growth we all experienced as players and people.

Professional sports grind to a halt

The night that we got out for spring break, the NBA’s greatest COVID-19 fear came true: a player had caught it. That player, all-star Rudy Gobert, was criticized for his carelessness towards the virus. In an interview a few days before his diagnosis where he was asked about potentially having the virus, he responded by touching all microphones in sight. Rudy’s situation was a turning point for how the virus has been handled in America. All professional sporting events were postponed or cancelled (save eSports, which continues to stand strong!).

Latonics drop new album: “Lose Yourself Again”

After a long wait, the Latonics’ new album is finally here! Lose Yourself Again features songs from the 2016-2017 Latonics and 2017-2018 Latonics. After an unexpected backup in production, the album was delayed significantly, but it was well worth the wait. In addition, the Latonics are now going virtual! This album will be directly uploaded to Spotify, Apple Music, and more, instead of being released as an actual CD. The album art was created by former Latonics member Erik Zou ’19. Newsies hailed as best Winter Musical of all time

Performances fill Smith Theater to capacity

In a year full of firsts, Roxbury Latin’s first Winter Musical was a huge success. This year’s production was Disney’s Newsies, a story about a group of young kids who sell newspapers in New York. The group is led by Jack Kelly, played by Nick Chehwan I, an energetic and passionate leader who organizes a strike against the newspaper company The World, after Mr. Pulitzer (Ian Richardson I) raises newspaper prices. Jack unites the different bands of Newsies from all across New York and forms a union against the newspapers. He is only able to organize everyone with the help of his friends, especially Crutchie (Ale Philippides III) and Davey (David Sullivan III). Despite Crutchie’s capture and imprisonment in The Refuge, a children’s prison, and Pulitzer’s attempts to bribe and thwart Jack’s plans, the Newsies push strong and eventually, with the help of Governor Roosevelt (Teddy Glaeser III), are able to get what they want.

With Governor Baker’s announcement that all Massachusetts schools will be effectively closed for the remainder of the year, many RL students are feeling a wide range of emotions. Seniors may be feeling sad about the abrupt end to their high school careers, while others might just be feeling annoyed to be locked up in the house with their younger siblings. But one thing we’re sure we can all agree on is that we would all rather be at RL hanging with the boys right now instead of being stuck in this whole quarantine mess.
