Facing tough competition, Varsity Hockey never lost heart

By Peter Frates II

The 2020 varsity hockey team finished its season just under .500 this year. This group was led by captains Dante Cuzzi, Joey Ryan, and an experienced crew of seniors. Sam Ginzberg, Matt Traietti, Mikey Jones, Kevin Swan, and Kam Miller, each played a critical role in the team’s success and set examples of hard work for the underclassmen. From the freshman to the seniors, this team was extremely close, partly due to the great senior leadership.

This level of dedication is a hallmark of the RL hockey program

After the leading scorer from the year before, Jack Luca, graduated, Joey Ryan stepped up to fill that role. Joey brought physicality to every game and found his scoring touch, tallying 15 goals on the year. A gifted athlete, next year Joey will be playing Division 1 baseball at Boston College. Dante Cuzzi led the team through his work ethic and high compete level. Cuzzi was a lockdown defender and also posed a threat jumping in the offense.

The 2020 season was an extremely competitive year in the ISL’s Eberhart Conference, as the top three teams moved on to the playoffs. The team battled hard to finish in fifth place and played the top teams to close games, competing hard until the final buzzer. This level of dedication is a hallmark of the RL program. RL had some significant victories against tough competition, including an overtime victory beating Brooks in their own barn and a big 3-1 win over a very strong St. George’s team.

In the end of year coaches’ meeting, five players received honors for their efforts during the season. Joey Ryan, Mikey Jones, and Bobby Luca were named All-ISL. Dante Cuzzi and Pete Frates received an All-ISL honorable mention.

Next year, the team is poised for success. These seven seniors took Coach Cataruzolo’s words to heart and did all they could to leave their jerseys in a better place than they found them. One major loss is our three year starting goalie, Mikey Jones, who gave us a chance to win each game with his stellar performances. But, the team has a lot of returning talent and will look to be a force throughout the Eberhart. As voted by the team, next year’s captains will be Bobby Luca, Pete Frates, and Will Murphy.
